{"id":90,"date":"2009-10-21T13:58:29","date_gmt":"2009-10-21T21:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thezeal.com\/cooking\/?p=90"},"modified":"2009-10-21T13:58:29","modified_gmt":"2009-10-21T21:58:29","slug":"bisibela-bhaath-sambhar-rice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kaizen.ist\/cooking\/bisibela-bhaath-sambhar-rice\/","title":{"rendered":"Bisibela Bhaath (Sambhar Rice)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rice &#8211; 1 cup<\/li>\n<li>Toor Dal &#8211; 1\/2 cup<\/li>\n<li>Veggies &#8211; Potatoes &#8211; 2, Drumstick &#8211; 1, Radish &#8211; 1, Carrot &#8211; 1, Peas &#8211; 1\/4 cup (can use a combination of these veggies or one or two of them as preferred)<\/li>\n<li>Tamarind Paste &#8211; 1 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Onions &#8211; 2 medium finely sliced (or small onions &#8211; 10 &#8211; these are preferred)<\/li>\n<li>Cashews &#8211; 1 tbsp (optional)<\/li>\n<li>Oil\/Ghee &#8211; 4 tbsp<\/li>\n<li>Mustard seeds &#8211; 1\/2 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Curry Leaves &#8211; 6<\/li>\n<li>Salt &#8211; to taste<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To make the sambhar powder:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coriander seeds &#8211; 2 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Red Chillies &#8211; 7<\/li>\n<li>Feungreek seeds &#8211; 1\/2 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Urad Dal &#8211; 1\/2 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Gram Dal &#8211; 1 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Cinnamon stick &#8211; 1<\/li>\n<li>Asafoetida &#8211; 1\/2 tsp<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Method :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a dry pan, fry the items to make sambhar powder and grind them to a coarse powder (Note: Don&#8217;t grind it to a very fine powder)<\/p>\n<p>Cook the rice and dal in a pressure cooker adding a pinch of salt. Cook the veggies in a separate pan and set aside.<br \/>\nIn a large pan, heat ghee\/oil, splutter mustard seeds, add the onions and saute for a while. Then add the curry leaves. Then add the boiled veggies. Add tamarind paste and little water, salt and the ground sambhar powder. Let the mixture come to a boil. Then, add the?  cooked rice and dal and mix well. Top this with coriander leaves for garnish and a little ghee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Miscellaneous:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tips: It is best if the rice is slightly overcooked for this preparation. Serve with chips, or appalam\/pappad.
