{"id":397,"date":"2009-10-24T04:46:01","date_gmt":"2009-10-24T12:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thezeal.com\/cooking\/?p=397"},"modified":"2009-10-24T04:46:01","modified_gmt":"2009-10-24T12:46:01","slug":"pavakkai-varuval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kaizen.ist\/cooking\/pavakkai-varuval\/","title":{"rendered":"Pavakkai Varuval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ingredients:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paavakkaai (Bitter gourd) &#8211; 2 cups diced<\/li>\n<li>Onions &#8211; 2 small (diced)<\/li>\n<li>Tomatoes &#8211; 1 big (diced)<\/li>\n<li>Mustard seeds &#8211; 1\/2 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Turmeric powder &#8211; 1\/4 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Chilli-coriander powder &#8211; 1 1\/2 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Garlic flakes &#8211; 5 (roughly chopped)<\/li>\n<li>Tamarind paste &#8211; 1\/2 tsp<\/li>\n<li>Jaggery &#8211; 1 lemon sized piece<\/li>\n<li>Oil &#8211; 2 tbsp<\/li>\n<li>Salt &#8211; to taste<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Method:<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nIn a pan, heat oil and splutter mustard seeds. Then add in the onions and saute till golden brown. Then add in the garlic and saute for a few minutes. Then add in the chilli-coriander, turmeric powder and salt and fry for a while. To this, add the tomatoes and then the paavakkai with a little water. Allow the veggies to cook. When almost done, add in the tamarind paste and allow to cook for a few minutes. Then, powder the jaggery and make it into a paste with a little water and add to the pan. Fry until all the water has drained out.
